The atonal pinyin romanization of the Mandarin pronunciation of Chinese 黃浦黄浦 (Huángpǔ, literally Yellow Bank), a clipping of 黃歇浦黄歇浦 (Huáng Xiē pǔ, literally Huang Xie Bank), named in honor of Lord Chunshen, a statesman of the Kingdom of Chu during the Warring States Era closely associated with Songjiang and Shanghai.
