Finnish
Etymology
huopa- + lahti. Originally a Tavastian name *Haapalaksi (from haapa + laksi, the original form of lahti). This name was borrowed into Swedish *Håplax (with the standard Swedish vowel shift /aː/ → /oː/). This form and the current Swedish form Hoplax (/-uː-/, through spelling pronunciation) have then been reborrowed back into Finnish. While the latter component was correctly recognized as lahti, the initial one was mistakenly - or rather folk-etymologically - interpreted as huopa.[1]
