This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Is there a scientific source for the Ellis Island bit? It was quite usual to use J for semi-consonantal I in earlier Italian (initially or intervocalically). Most Italian words and names in I + vowel can easily be attested with J as well.”
