From either Portuguese Japão or directly from Early Manila Hokkien 日本 (Ji̍t-pún) as recorded in the Dictionario Hispanico Sinicum (1626-1642), ultimately from Middle Chinese 日本 (ȵiɪt̚ puənX, literally “sun origin”).
