Etymology
A medieval name revived in 1936, prior to which the municipality had been called Uusikirkko. Possibly from a pseudo-Swedish (Kaland) or pseudo-Latin (Kalandia, Calandia) of a derivative of kala, perhaps kalainen (“with plenty of fish”). Alternatively possibly from a Low German place name Kalant (found in 13th century documents from Mecklenburg).[1]
