Of Balto-Slavic origin, from Lithuanian karõsas, ultimately from a Slavic language, such as Russian карась (karasʹ, “crucian carp”), itself perhaps borrowed from Medieval Latin coracinus (“kind of river fish”).[1][2] Also see English crucian.
