First attested as cattindic in 1214. Compound of kat and dijk (levee). The element kat is difficult to interpret; it may derive from Middle Dutch katte (earthen mound supported by beams and poles) or be used in a metaphorical sense to refer to the poor quality of the levee. Compare Cadzand.
