First attested as cattindic in 1214. Compound of kat and dijk (“levee”). The element kat is difficult to interpret; it may derive from Middle Dutch katte (“earthen mound supported by beams and poles”) or be used in a metaphorical sense to refer to the poor quality of the levee. Compare Cadzand.
