Etymology

From kauha +‎ -va, given as a name to the river (thence to the town) after the nearby lake Kauhajärvi, in which the kauha (scoop, ladle, dipper) is probably a reference to the shape of the lake. The older and more straightforward name Kauhajoki (by simply replacing järvi (lake) with joki (river)) may have been avoided to prevent confusion with another nearby river of the same name.[1]
