Luxembourgish

Etymology

From Middle High German kelde, from Old High German chaldī, *kaldī, northern variant of chaltī, from Proto-West Germanic *kaldī.

The expected Luxembourgish form is *Käll (which is attested in neighbouring dialects of Central Franconian). The alveolar stop was probably preserved (or added) due to analogy with nouns derived with the suffix Proto-Germanic *-iþō, such as Stëllt from stëll. Hence, Keelt is analysable as kal +‎ -t. The vowel was lengthened by analogy with the adjective. Cognate with German Kälte, Dutch kou.
