Coined by American writer and television producer George R. R. Martin. From the title of a character in George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels; popularised by the later television adaptation Game of Thrones. Borrowed from Dothraki khaleesi (“queen”), feminine of khal (“king”).
