From Old Swedish kivenäb (“wooden rampart of a fortress”) (compare Swedish kivenäbb), from Middle Low German kīvenibbe, from kîven (“to fight, quarrel”) + nibbe (“beak, bill”). Superficially kiven (“of rock, of stone”) + napa (“navel, pole, pivot”), although this is a folk-etymological form.[1]
