From Middle High German *knudel, western variant of knutel, knütel, from Old High German chnutil, ultimately from the root of Knoten (“knot”).
The word means “thick branch” in general Middle High German (compare German Knüttel (“club, cudgel”)), but does not have this sense in Central Franconian, which uses Knöppel and Klöppel instead.
