First attested as Cruyslande in 1501. Compound of kruis (“cross”) and land (“land”). The name may have been coined as a reference to the large sums of money that the inhabitants of the settlement were forced to pay in order to ransom the owner of the village, Engelbrecht of Nassau (1451-1504).
