Etymology 1

From Middle High German kugel, kugele, of uncertain origin, but probably related to Keule (club).[1]

(Can this(+) etymology be sourced?) Possibly from Proto-Germanic *kuggilaz (knobbed instrument), a derivative of*kuggǭ (cog, swelling), from Proto-Indo-European *gewgʰ- (swelling, bow), an extension of *gew- (to bow, bend, arch, curve”), whence also perhaps Albanian gogël (acorn, small ball).
