Apparently from Latvian Kuldīga. According to Karulis possibly ultimately from the iterative form of kult (“to beat (eggs, etc.), thrash”) – kuldīt whence kuldīgs (“thrashing around, turbulent (of waters)”), the German Goldingen possibly from an earlier version *Kuldinga.[1]
