Kuopio
From a medieval spoken form of the Russian given name Прокопий (Prokopij), originally as an anthroponym. The town could have been named after this through a family name by early settlers, or used by the owners of hunting grounds once located in the same region.[1]
Kuopio
The internal locative cases (inessive, illative and elative) are used with this place name when referring to a location; for example, "in Kuopio" is Kuopiossa.
