To stop this new and serious threat, General Wedemeyer requested General Sultan to transfer to him two of the American-trained and -equipped Chinese divisions advancing in Burma. These were promptly shipped north to China by air. Additional reinforcements were gathered from other parts of the front in China. These forces, strongly supported by the Fourteenth Air Force, counterattacked east at Kweiyang. This unexpectedly strong opposition finally stopped the Japanese advance.
