Etymology

First attested as loiverlo in 1244. Originally a compound of an unknown first element and lo (light forest). The first element has been variously interpreted as a hydronym, a term connected to German Leber (tanner) and Middle High German lewer (raised burial mound) and as a personal name. The second element was gradually replaced by rode (land cleared of trees).
