First attested as luppingahusum in 1315. Borrowed from West Frisian Lippenhuzen, derived from a compound of Old Frisian Luppinga (a surname) and the plural form of hūs (house). The first element was gradually reinterpreted to lip (northern lapwing, Vanellus vanellus). Compare Lippenwoude.
