First attested as luppingahusum in 1315. Borrowed from West Frisian Lippenhuzen, derived from a compound of Old Frisian Luppinga (a surname) and the plural form of hūs (“house”). The first element was gradually reinterpreted to lip (“northern lapwing, Vanellus vanellus”). Compare Lippenwoude.
