From Spanish Mactan, from earlier Spanish Manctan of uncertain origin. Oral tradition suggests that it is derived from Cebuano mangatang meaning "one(s) who wait", which was used in place of Opon after Lapu-Lapu supposedly used the island as an outpost for piracy.
