Etymology

Unknown. Possibly borrowed from Finnish maja or Estonian maja (hut, cabin), as a 1655 map shows the name near seven small houses. If so, it is a compound of maja +‎ -or +‎ -na, literally The Huts. First attested in 1652 as Mayerne.[1]

A former suggestion claimed that the area was named after Mariebergs Kyrka (“Marieberg's Church”). However, the name of the area predates the church.[1]

Proper noun

Majorna ? (genitive Majornas)

  1. A district in Gothenburg, Sweden.
