Etymology
Derived from Spanish Nancayan, from Ibaloi or Kankanaey nangkayang (“high up in the mountain”).
Folklore says that a foreigner noticed a man molding and asked him where he got the metal. The old man replied "Mankayang ka." ("Walk up on the mountain."). Others say that a foreigner asked a local what the name of the place was, in which the local was accompanied by his resting dog. The local thought that the foreigner was asking what the local's dog was doing, and replied "Nankakayang".
