Borrowed from Maori Matariki, short for ngā +‎ mata +‎ o +‎ te +‎ ariki +‎ o +‎ Tāwhirimātea, meaning "the eyes of the god Tāwhirimātea". In Māori legend, the Pleiades star cluster which it is named after was from Tāwhirimātea's plucked eyes.
