First attested as merkelbeke in 1283. Compound of an unclear first element and beek (brook, stream). The first element has been interpreted as Old Dutch Markilo (a personal name), a compound of mark (demarcated area, unorganised communal land) and lo (light forest) (compare Markelo), and as a hydronym *Markilo (derived from mark (border)).
