It doesn't have to be this exhaustive...

I don't understand. Too many syllables, too wordy? --Anatoli (обсудить/вклад)

Data modules

It looks like these conversion modules contain quite a lot of data in the form of conversion tables. I think it might be good to separate those into a separate data module? —CodeCat 02:54, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

I agree. I'll look into it when I have a moment. --Anatoli (обсудить/вклад) 03:10, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
I don't know whether it's better to have one module for all the data, or to split it up. Merging it would mean loading it takes longer, but we're using mw.loadData, which means that it's only loaded once per page. It would give a bigger speed gain if it's used many times on a page. —CodeCat 03:16, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
I suck at Lua, so I'll take any good suggestion to improve performance. I don't mind if you do it, even better. The module is meant to show Zhuyin on each Mandarin entry (if there is no strong opposition to it) and can be used on some varieties of {{l}} or {{temp}}, if it makes any difference. Actually, it seems Wyang (talkcontribs) has reduced the size. --Anatoli (обсудить/вклад) 03:26, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Seems to be working now. (btw, it really should be Zhuyin, not Bopomofo...) Wyang (talk) 04:04, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Great stuff, thank you! Agreed, "Zhuyin" is more formal, so we should use it as a parameter. We only have one "pint=" parameter per entry, so we can only have one "zhuyin=" parameter, so 多音字 like 垃圾 (lājī, lèsè) will only get ㄌㄚ ㄐㄧ but not ㄌㄜˋ ㄙㄜˋ because pint=la1ji1.
垃圾 (traditional and simplified, Pinyin lājī, lèsè, Zhuyin ㄌㄚ ㄐㄧ)
versus
垃圾 (traditional and simplified, Pinyin lājī, lèsè, Zhuyin ㄌㄚ ㄐㄧ, ㄌㄜˋ ㄙㄜˋ)
Is that OK? BTW, there's also Module:Bopo-convert. --Anatoli (обсудить/вклад) 04:31, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Why not zhuyin2=, zhuyin3= etc? —CodeCat 04:37, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Then it has to be done from toned pinyin, not numbered. There is only one pint= (numbered) per entry and multiple pin= (toned) per entry see 垃圾 (lājī, lèsè) (two pin's - lājī, lèsè, one pint - la1ji1) (not the best vocabulary example but it's the first one I thought about, which is pronounced differently in mainland China and Taiwan (lājī and lèsè). I was hoping I could finish this module myself and converting numbered pinyin is much easier because a number is always at the end of a syllable (tone marks can be on various vowels) and numbered pinyin is used for sorting categories (at least for simplified but traditional Chinese gets converted gradually). --Anatoli (обсудить/вклад) 04:45, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Could use another script which converts Pinyin with diacritics to numbered Pinyin. Wyang (talk) 04:52, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes, exactly. Then you don't even need the pint= parameter anymore. —CodeCat 04:53, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
I agree, of course, but I'll have to rely on you guys, to do it. :) I misread. I thought you meant toned pinyin to zhuyin. Does it mean we need two modules running? Toned pinyin is usually up-to-date, numbered (which is not displayed may be not, and there's only one pint, even if there are multiple readings). Still need your assistance. --Anatoli (обсудить/вклад) 04:57, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
I will have a go at this. Wyang (talk) 05:07, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. --Anatoli (обсудить/вклад) 05:11, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Could also do Wade-Giles while we're at it. DTLHS (talk) 05:16, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Then we would need whole pronunciation sections, like Burmese, Korean, etc. Hanyu Pinyin is now well understood and Zhuyin is still used in Taiwanese schools, as an input on mobile phones. In my opinion, we don't need Wade-Giles, Yale, Tongyong Pinyin and many other varieties of Chinese romanisation but it's IMO. --Anatoli (обсудить/вклад) 05:23, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. I just figured if it was supported by {{cmn-hanzi}} we might as well automate it (it's completely predictable from pinyin, iirc). DTLHS (talk) 05:28, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
FYI, Pleco supports Hanyu Pinyin and Zhuyin Fuhao, see Pleco with Zhuyin. On my iPad version I can see both, on androids, you have to choose one or the other. These are the two competing systems (Pinyin is obviously winning). --Anatoli (обсудить/вклад) 05:38, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Great job! I'll start a discussion regarding proposed changes to Mandarin Chinese entries. (I posted a wrong link to Pleco with Zhuyin but I hope it's fine). --Anatoli (обсудить/вклад) 06:12, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Migrating and deleting this

I have rewritten and migrated this module to Module:cmn-pron (#py_zhuyin), so that the functions are kept centralised. I am running touch.py on the pages transcluding this page. I think we can delete this page once that is done. Maybe we should also migrate Module:Bopo-convert there too; that would be easier since it is not really in use. Wyang (talk) 02:37, 19 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

You know better what needs to be done:) Can we keep separately simple conversion tools like {{zh-pinyin-to-zhuyin}} and {{zh-zhuyin-to-pinyin}} (they need improvement and changing the module call to use Module:cmn-pron) for simple conversions back and forth? Someone might know how to write something in Zhuyin or want to know a transliteration of Zhuyin. --Anatoli (обсудить/вклад) 03:10, 19 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
I just wrote a Zhuyin-Pinyin conversion function in Module:cmn-pron (#zhuyin_py) and I have made both templates call the respective function there. Wyang (talk) 05:47, 19 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. --Anatoli (обсудить/вклад) 06:03, 19 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
