munkki + niemi, adapted from the Swedish name, Swedish Munksnäs. The initial part is munkki (“monk”), but there has never been a monastery in the area. The name may derive in reference to Estonian monks from the Padise monastery, which owned some land on the coast of Uusimaa in the 14th and 15th centuries. Alternatively, it may have been in reference to a single person, who was either a monk or was called such as a byname/nickname.[1]
