Dutch
Etymology
First attested as hemmerte in 1144. Likely a compound of neder (“downriver”) and Old Dutch hamar (“stone, rock”) with collectivising suffix -itja-. The element neder was added later to distinguish the settlement from Ophemert, while the element noord (“north, northern”) was added after the village was split in half through the extension of the Afgedamde Maas. Formerly a single village with Nederhemert-Zuid. Compare Hemmerde and Hemmerden.
