Etymology
First attested as Iteram in 1143. Compound of neer (“lower”) and the hydronym Itter. The hydronym in turn derives from either Proto-Indo-European *id- (“swell, engorge”) or *ajadh- (“bright, clear”). The prefix neer was added at a later date to distinguish the settlement from Opitter. Compare Itteren and Ittervoort.
