Nokia
Nokia (plural Nokias)
Probably from an unattested word *nois (genitive *nokiin) meaning a certain kind of fur animal, most likely beaver, marten or sable. Thus, Nokia would originally referred to a place where these animals lived, or more likely referring to a center of fur trade. The Finnish word in question is not attested in any dialect, but may be from Proto-Finnic *nuksi, if it is akin to Estonian nugis (“marten”), although this is not certain. Alternatively, if the word specifically referred to black fur animals, it may be derived from noki (“soot”).
Nokia
The external locative cases (adessive, allative and ablative) are used with this place name when referring to a location; for example, "in Nokia" is Nokialla.
