Finnish
Etymology
nuuks- + -io, perhaps through a river name *Nuuksjoki (oblique *Nuuksjoe- > *Nuuksjoo- > *Nuuksjo- > *Nuuksio-). The name may derive from an old lake name *Nuuksijärvi or *Nuuksujärvi. This has often been considered to derive from a Sami word for swan (*ńukčë). However, old attestations suggest that the name originally had a diphthong, either ou or uo, and if this is the case, the Sami etymology cannot be upheld.[1]
