Dutch
Etymology
First attested with certainty as bietha in 1034. Compound of op (“up, high”) and a second element that is difficult to interpret. Potentially derived from Old Dutch *bihegan (“surrounded by a hedge”) (see haag) or *bicht (“turn, corner”) (compare bocht). The element op was added at a later date in order to distinguish the settlement from the younger Grevenbicht. Compare Buchten.
