Yoruba

Ògúndá

Etymology

An ancient term associated with the majority of the Ifa-divination systems of other Volta-Niger groups. Proposed to be derived from Proto-Yoruboid *ò-gʷṹtã́, where it has a synonymous name Èjítọ́n, used currently in Yoruba only in the Ekiti dialect, but is regarded as this term in other languages. See Igala Ògwútọ, Igbo Ògúte, Nupe Gúta, Ebira Ògútá, Gun Ègúdá, Fon Gùdá, ultimately from a common Volta-Niger root, perhaps Proto-Volta-Niger *-gúta, but the etymology is not known beyond there. Folk etymologies associate with the deity Yoruba Ògún, which could suggest a link to Igala ògwú.
