First attested as utrathorp in 1315. Borrowed from West Frisian Olterterp, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian utra (“outer, outward”) and thorp (“village”). The second element was gradually reinterpreted as terp (“artificial mound used for habitation”). The toponym contrasts with Ureterp.
