Potentially attested as lechinke in the second half of the 13th century, attested with certainty as aesterletzenze in 1402. Borrowed from West Frisian Easterlittens, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian āsta (east-, eastern) and either Lêta (a personal name) or *leta (watercourse) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi-. The element easter was added to distinguish the settlement from Westerlittens.
