First attested as nova ecclesia in 1224. Calque of West Frisian Easternijtsjerk, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian nija (“new”) and tzercka (“church”). The element easter (“eastern, east-”) was added later to distinguish the settlement from Westernijkerk.
