Attested as 't Schilt in 1618. Compound of oud (old) and an unclear element. The second element may derive from West Frisian skil (small seashell) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -t or, alternatively, be cognate to the hydronym Schelde. The element oud was added to distinguish the settlement from Nieuweschild. Compare Schouwen.
