Finnish
Etymology
Pirkko + -la, a probably mistaken translation of the Swedish name Britas as containing the female name Brita which corresponds to Pirkko in Finnish (both are diminutives of the same Swedish name). The Swedish name is however unlikely to derive from a female given name, as farms were rarely named after women (when they were, they were usually named after widows). The etymology of the Swedish name is not certain, although it may contain a hypothetical word *betare, an occupational noun derived from beta (“to pickle/tan leather”).[1]
