From Middle High German Pom(m)ern, from Middle Low German Pommer(e)n, Pomer(e)n, from Polabian , from Proto-Slavic *pomořane (“coast-dwellers”), derived from Proto-Slavic *po moři (“by the sea”). Originally referred collectively to the population (see Pommer) and then became a geographical term (as with many other German placenames in -(e)n). Cognate with Polish Pomorzanie, Pomorze.
