Etymology

The town was originally called Prostějovice, which was derived from person personal name Prostěj +‎ -ovice, meaning "a village of Prostěj's people". Prostěj was an informal form of some compound personal name such as Prostimír or Prostislav, where the first component is derived from Proto-Slavic *prostъ (simple). For similar etymology see Budějovice or Hodějovice.[1]

The name Prostějovice was shortened to Prostějov in the 1st half of the 13th century.[2] Compare Holešov or Chomoutov.
