Deverbal from rabatzen, now obsolete in favour of Rabatz machen, from Polish rąbać, alternatively or concurrently dialectal rabanzen, rabastern etc. from old ranzen, ratzen going back to Middle High German and ultimately related to onomatopoeic formations such as well-known ratschen and rasseln.
