From Proto-Sarmatian *sāg, from Proto-Scythian *ṣāki, from Proto-Iranian *šākah (something forked, having branches).[1][2][3] Cognate with Khotanese (śśājsano, fork), Sogdian 𐫢𐫀𐫄𐫍 (šʾɣh /⁠šāx⁠/, branch), and perhaps further to Lithuanian šakės (forks), if not an Iranian borrowing.
