From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-ŋja (“fish”). Cognate with Burmese ငါး (nga:, “fish”), Tibetan ཉ (nya, “fish”), Old Chinese 魚 (*ŋa), Nuosu ꉛ (hxe, “fish”) and Jingpho nga. Compare Lhao Vo ngo:, Zaiwa ngozo, Longchuan Achang ŋa³¹ ʂua³¹ and Hpon tă ŋàh.
