According to Martirosyan, belongs with Old Armenian մաւր (mawr, “mud, marsh, swamp”) and perhaps մուր (mur, “soot”) and together with them may be treated as a European substrate word. According to Rejzek, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *mewr-.
