From Proto-Finno-Ugric *-ńće-j, *-nśe-j; derived from the same ending as in *-it'ak (stem *-iccë-), and probably also the diminutive ending *-ic(c)ë-. Cognate with Proto-Samic *-ńćë- (potential mood marker).
