Etymology
From earlier *ši(k)šna, cognate with Proto-Samic *sësnē, probably borrowed from a substrate language. Proto-Baltic (whence Latvian siksna, Lithuanian šikšnà) and Erzya кшна (kšna, “strap”), Moksha (šna)) are probably separate loans from the same substrate source.[1]
