Uncertain: possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bʰér-mō ~ *bʰr̥-mnés,[1][2] from *bʰer- (“to boil”) (compare with Latin fermentum (“fermentation; yeast”)), or perhaps from *gʷʰér-mō ~ *gʷʰr̥-mnés,[3] from *gʷʰer- (“warm, hot”).
