Etymology

Of uncertain origin.

Rix derives the verb from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰR̥-né-H-ti ~ *ǵʰR̥-n-H-énti, from *ǵʰeRH- (“to be angry”).^[1]

However, Cheung and Mayrhofer refrain from assigning any etymology.^[2]^[3]

(transitive) to vex, torment
(intransitive) to be angry, upset
