From Proto-Indo-European *péth₂r̥ ~ pth₂én- (feather, wing), from *peth₂- (to fly).[1] The oblique stem of the original noun was extended with ā-stem endings; compare Proto-Germanic *feþrō (feather), which was similarly extended, but from the nominative stem.

The original PIE nominative stem is preserved in Latin accipiter from *aku-peter (literally sharp wing, keen wing).
