Proto-Italic

Etymology

Origin unknown. Whatmough compares the Etruscan toponym ๐Œ๐Œ–๐Œ๐Œ‹๐Œ–๐Œ๐Œ€ (pupluna), though this does not provide much further insight. A connection to *plฤ“ล (โ€œto fillโ€), via a reduplicated form *po-plhโ‚-o-s is phonetically possible, albeit strange and semantically unclear,[1] but compare Proto-Germanic *fulkฤ… (possibly) and Ancient Greek ฯ€ฮปแฟ†ฮธฮฟฯ‚ (plรชthos) from this root.
