Proto-Kho-Bwa
Etymology
Inherited from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *mriŋ (“sound; noise; animal cry”).[1] Cognate with Lepcha (/ʔábryáng/), Drung (/ɑŋ⁵⁵bɹiŋ⁵³/), (/ɑŋ³¹bɹɯŋ⁵³/, “name”), Chinese 鳴/鸣 (míng, “to cry, call”), Burmese မြည် (mrany, “to make a sound”), Japhug mbri (“to be noisy”).
Per Bodt, not to be derived from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r-miŋ (“name”). STEDT reconstructs Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s-braŋ for some of the cognates mentioned above.
